Sounds Phenomenal - A History
2001
After the successes of 'SP2000', a number of different events were explored, to investigate the direction that the new group would take Sounds Phenomenal in the future. Negotiations were undertaken with the Brighton Hilton Metropole, to put on a much larger version of the Music Industry Conference and pitched at a national level. This required such a considerable ramping up of operations that for a group still without core funding it would have been like trying to run having just learnt to walk and the idea was shelved in favour of more attainable options.
A joint event with Zap Productions was proposed, consisting of a musical cultural exchange to be called 'Cross Channel Purposes'. This event was proposed as a forum between speakers from the French and English Music Industries that compared and contrasted the state of play on either side of the Channel and provided information on touring/performing in Europe to English acts. Unfortunately, the Foot-And-Mouth-Disease outbreaks of that year meant cross channel travel was greatly restricted over the Spring/Summer period and the event was put on hold.
Eventually, the Live Showcase at Sussex University that had been introduced during the 'SP2000' series of events at the University's Freshers Week celebrations was chosen for development, and renamed 'Brighton Live!'. It became the beginnings of a event package model and started to consolidate Sounds Phenomenal’s relationship with Sussex University. It was presented as a 'sampler of the scene', a showcase of some of the large variety of live music on offer to students new to Brighton.
